Carlos Gurgel graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, Gurgel spent a couple of years working on a factory of tire components. Mr. Gurgel return to qualification studies to pursue a master degree in ramjet propulsion and a PhD in combustion sciences (1997 – University of Sao Paulo and Technical Research Centre of Finland). Dr. Gurgel has conducted two post-doc programs: (i) at the Combustion and Propulsion Laboratory – INPE and (ii) at the College of Forest Resources – University of Washington (Seattle) researching on numerical modeling of coal combustion and forest fires. Dr. Gurgel was a pioneer in the development of Hybrid Rocket Propulsion technology in Brazil. He is a professor at the University of Brasilia, Mechanical Engineering Department, on leave to work as the Director of Satellite Applications and Development of the Brazilian Space Agency.
